May 2021

Time is flying by, even though Corona is still holding its grip on the world. Summer is at the door and we hope and wish that everyone can enjoy it despite possible limitations. In the summertime the projects continue as usual. Even better: We’ve added two sideprojects to the projects we’ve been talking about in the news from march, with the help from Wilde Ganzen. In this item we’re going to jump into the details, but first we’re starting off with a very special milestone.

  • Milestone for employee from the very beginning, Kasper Hoekman
  • Pre-school done and in use
  • Start projects from the news item in march 2021
  • New project application at Wilde Ganzen with two urgent requests
  • Father Carowf in action: Blooddonation
  • From Father Avalin to Father Justin

Milestone for employee from the very beginning; Kasper Hoekman
Recently we put Kasper Hoekman in the spotlight and rightfully so. Kasper collects the proceeds from our projects at several supermarkets in Twente . He also keeps track of the results and thus he reached the milestone of €100.000. A beautiful amount, which he should be very proud of. We have put this money to good use in Sri Lanka over the past few years. Thanks for all your effort Kasper.

Pre-school now finally done and open for use!

Preschool startIn the news item from march 2021 we wrote about the pre-school and stated that it was almost finished even though during building the school we had to endure a lot of setbacks, but now we are officially done. The school is ready! We hope that the children can profit from this school and that it will be a space which provides a lot of learning experiences. Click here for more pictures.

Start projects from the news item in March 2021

Do you remember? In our news item from March we also talked about a huge project that receives support from Wilde Ganzen and partly from Stichting Een Helpende Hand. We want to realize the project. This project consists of:

  1. setting up job-specific education for children/youth, including a sewing education, how to make bags and a technical education.
  2. Setting up a trauma healing program in combination with tackling alcohol and drug abuse.
  3. The renovation of the OBTEC Center, so it can be used for courses and training the especially youth, but is also accessible for adults.

With pride we can say that all projects have been started. The Fathers state that all three projects are equally important. The Fathers only make requests for things with priority. Because of this, the trauma healing center (side project 2) holds a special place in their hart. The fathers are being confronted with many situations that seem hopeless. We want to get rid of this hopelessness. The side projects 1 and 3 we will realize this, but some youth has to go through side project 2 first in order to participate in education with their full potential.

New project application at Wilde Ganzen

*Father Harance, whom we have known for many years because he worked for OMI in our project area, now works in the south of Sri Lanka with the poorest population, working in tea plantations. This region has its own problems and Father Harance called on us. To be able to visit the villages in his extensive project area, he urgently needs a 4WD car. The roads are so bad that it is too dangerous to use the motorbike that he normally has as a means of transport to visit people or take them to a hospital. Wilde Ganzen and Havonos support this request. *Father Carowf also came with a request. The Youth Empowerment Center (YEC) has been having a problem with the animals in the area. They demolish a lot of stuff in and around the school. There needs to be a fence placed so the animals can be kept away from the school. *A solution must be created for the widows/families to be able to provide for their own food from now on by means of, among other things, the construction of a vegetable garden, chickens, etc. Especially now in this time of hunger and misery, but also they have food for the longer run. For these projects we did a new request at Wilde Ganzen. In our next news item we will probably reveal if this request has been accepted.

Father Carowf in action: Blood donation

bloeddonatie

We continue with Father Carowf in this story because we are deeply impressed by him. He set up a blood donation program at the YEC. People from YEC but also people from the area have been donating blood. We are proud of Father Carowf and we congratulate him with this successful project. Click here for more pictures.

From Father Avalin to Father Justin

FatherAvalinJustin

At the OMI it is mandatory that after a few years the Fathers are being transferred to a different working location. The how and why of this rule is beyond the scope of explaining here. Now it has been the turn of Father Avalin to switch locations. This meant that he had to say goodbye to his learning-and -working farm which he realized , into which he had invested so much time, energy and love with heart and soul. It was hard for him to say goodbye and to be honest: us too! we from Havonos really saw him leave with sorrow and will certainly miss him. It is a sympathetic and a hard worker. We wish him every success and pleasure in his new work. He put a lot of time, energy and love in this farm which gave Father Avalin a heavy heart when saying goodbye and we will surely miss him. It is a sympathetic and a hard worker. We wish him every success and pleasure in his new work. Of course, Father Avalin's departure means that a new responsible Father has been placed on the learning/working farm. That's Father Justin and another Priest colleague. They are in the process of settling in at the moment. We wish both of them a lot of success and fun on the farm.

This concludes the news item from may 2021. Thanks for your interest in our work. We feel supported because of it. Please keep on supporting us, because Sri-Lanka needs it. An urgent matter at this time is emergency aid. Because of the current state (lockdown, staying at home, no work, no finance, no food) famine surfaces. The Fathers try their best to help the people. This is partly possible because of donations. When doing a donation, please state if it is for a project or for the emergency aid. We will make sure the money will be put in the right place with the right help. We thank you in advance.

We wish you all a great summer.
