Summer has flown past! We hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather. For us it was a very busy time keeping all the projects running! We have been able to finish a number of projects as well as starting up new initiatives. In this newsletter we would like to share some information on the following topics:

Progress of construction at the preschool
Unfortunately, the construction of the new preschool, which we have mentioned in the previous newsletters, has been at a standstill for a number of months. The reason for this was the attacks that occurred this past Easter. Because of the attacks, suppliers did not dare to travel to the area to deliver supplies. Without the needed materials building could not continue. Fortunately, the situation is now such that the materials have been delivered and the building process is again underway! We are very impressed how fast construction goes in Sri Lanka. The contours of the school are already clearly visible! The next stage will be the request for the design and furnishing of the interior of the school that we received last week. This request was not included in the first application, so we are trying to get this arranged and will let you know how it goes!
Application for the expansion of the teaching/work farm, in cooperation with SEHH and Wilde Ganzen
The farm, whose director is Father Avalin, is a great success despite the many setbacks we have experienced. Here are a few examples: Many pigs that were ready for butchering, contracted swine fever and died. Extreme heat caused the failure of many crops. The electricity went out frequently, thus the water pump could not function. Water could not be pumped up from the well for the animals or the crops. But on a positive note Father Avalin is in control and will not be stopped by these difficulties!
There is currently a need for:
- The expansion of the stalls and the chicken coops
- Fencing around the site, equipped with security cameras
- Solar power, which we referred to in the last newsletter
- An extra-large well with a pump to irrigate 50 ha. of land
- Two classrooms that can be combined into one large classroom
- Better equipment for the computer rooms such as a professional printer, more computers, a projector and air conditioning
At this moment only a very small part of the available land has been cultivated. As soon as the solar power, the new well and the irrigation systems are in place, Father Avalin hopes to expand by raising coconut trees and cashew trees. Experts have already indicated that the grounds are very suitable for these trees.
The classrooms are intended for the (extracurricular) care of the children from the area. Many families are very poor and parents are continually looking for sources of income. Because of this, parents are often absent from the home. Many of the parents have not had schooling and children are often left to fend for themselves. Addiction to drugs or home-brewed alcohol is a real concern. The people in the area do trust Father Avalin and his colleagues and allow the children to take part in extra lessons at the farm. The computer rooms are used intensively and are in great need of more space and equipment.
Working together with SEHH and Wilde Ganzen, Havonos has determined to address a portion of the above-mentioned needs in a combined project. Havonos will try to take care of the needs that will not be addressed in the combined effort. We will continue to share with you on this subject.
Official opening of the computer room
In our last newsletter we wrote about the two people who traveled together from Sri Lanka with Sieni in order to follow a program made possible by Rockids, Train the ICT Trainer. They will be creating the first ICT learning platform. The computer room at the farm was officially opened on September 14, 2019. Cani wil be teaching the children computers there as well as at YEC. Nerojan will be working with various projects including Caritas in Mannar. The children and students are very interested and highly motivated to learn! See photos!
Donation Hofsteestichting
Earlier this year, Father Avalin had asked for financial support in order to expand the chicken coops. The eggs and meat from the chickens are in great demand in the vicinity. We submitted a request for funding to the Hofsteestichting in Alkmaar and are so glad to report that we received a donation in the amount of €3,000. This was the exact amount that Father Avalin needed to realize his wish!
Donation Asparagus Company De Weerd
Have you by any chance seen the beautiful floats in Raalte during Stöppelhaene? First prize went to Scouting Raalte with their amazing float! During the building process Scouting Raalte was allowed to use a space belonging to Asparagus Company De Weerd. The scouts wanted to give €100 to the Asparagus Company for the use of their space. We are very grateful to Henk en Florentina De Weerd for asking the scouts to donate the money directly to our foundation! Many thanks!

In our last newsletter we shared with you about Mirjam van den Berg who has a special place in her heart for Anna’s Home.
