September 2018

The long, warm, dry summer is behind us and we have already been able to taste the autumn. We from Havonos have been working behind the scenes for a while. High time to inform you of what we are (or have been) doing. In this newsletter you can read about:

  • Completing the project ‘a learning / working farm for (war) widows’, with Wilde Ganzen
  • Completing project 'clean water and education' at the learning / working farm, with Rabobank Employees' Fund ‘Share4More’
  • Expansion Youth Empowerment Center (YEC)
  • Realization sanitary facilities at Anna's Home for Children
  • Movies
  • New project: pre-school, together with SEHH – and, hopefully, with Wilde Ganzen

We wish you much reading pleasure!

Finishing project ‘learning / working farm for (war) widows’, with Wilde Ganzen
The learning / working farm for (war) widows is as good as ready. In any case, the farm is in full glory and in full operation. The widows work hard, both on the land and in the stables, as well as in theclassrooms, where they are prepared in three months to be able to independently farm their own land, or care for animals.  From Association "Train 8.28 H.IJ.S.M. the children have got beautiful play equipment, they are very happy with it.

The last amounts have been transferred and then an important task began for us: making the final report for Wilde Ganzen, which has co-financed the project. Such a final report requires a lot of time and energy, but once it was finished, it gave us a lot of satisfaction.

We are happy to inform you that the final report was received with enthusiasm by Wilde Ganzen. A nice boost for the collaborators of Havonos who have been very busy with this!

We can not let go of the farm completely. The intention is that the project can ultimately be financially self-supporting. The widows get a small income for their work on the farm and the rest goes back into the farm, to make it possible for the next group of widows to follow the same trajectory. We are not yet at that point, so at least the coming year we will financially support this project. The basis has already been laid and looks very good. We thank you for your contribution, which enables us to realize this project

Even more happy news: last year a donor named Jaap donated a calf to the learning / working farm. In Sri Lanka they were so happy with this beautiful calf that they spontaneously called her Jaap. Recently, from Sri Lanka, we received the happy and proud message that Jaap, meanwhile an adult cow, gave birth to a beautiful calf. How beautiful and fine is that? See here Jaap senior and Jaap junior

Completing project 'clean water and education' at the learning / working farm, with Rabobank Employees' Fund Share4More

A second project was underway at the same learning / working farm: the construction of a clean water supply, intended for the widows on the farm, for the animals, for irrigation on land and for the local population. As many people as possible benefit from this project. We could not have realized this useful and necessary construction of a clean water supply without the support of the Rabobank Employees' Fund Share4More. In addition to this provision, Share4More also financially supported the learning / working farm with a donation with which we could start the training for the widows. Fantastic, and Share4More: thank you very much! Collage.

Expansion Youth Empowerment Center (YEC)

You can (re) read it on our website with realized projects: in 2016-2017 we have built a technical craft school, where young, often traumatized, people can follow vocational training. Now, just a few years later, the school is already too small and there is a need for expansion with 3 classrooms. We realize this project in collaboration with Stichting Een Helpende Hand (SEHH) and a friendly foundation. Father Philip of OMI, director of the YEC, also asked us for computers, to be used in ICT lessons. Ten computers have been donated by the friendly foundation. We are looking for a donor for another 10 computers. In addition to ICT and Technology lessons, there is also a need for vocational training, such as make-up, hairstyling, icing, cakes and jewelry making, etc. As soon as the new premises are ready, YEC will start with this. Beautiful and encouraging developments, especially because the students are super motivated and enthusiastic.

Realization of sanitary facilities at Anna's Home for Children
In previous newsletters you could read about the miserable circumstances in which the orphanage Anna's Home for Children was located when we first visited this house. A lot has already been realized, which we also wrote about earlier. A major thorn in our eye was the poor sanitation. The girls of the orphanage had to wash themselves in the open air at a well, a stone's throw from barracks with soldiers. A particularly undesirable situation that we have committed ourselves to and which has fortunately ended. During and just after the summer we received enthusiastic messages and photos from Sister Chrishani, who is in charge of Anna's Home: the bathroom was ready and put into use. All donors: thank you very much, on behalf of all the residents of Anna's Home for Children and Sister Chrishani! Videos and films have been made especially for Havonos, during the visit of Nicolette van Dam to our projects in Sri Lanka. You can view the link here. What is also very nice is that the older youth at the Learning / working farm have made their own 'fitness center', see here how they made it. They are short and well worth viewing

New project: a pre-school, in collaboration with SEHH and, hopefully, Wilde Ganzen
One of the reasons why you read a news article from us only now is that we have not started a major new project in the past few months, so there was not that much to report. No matter how crazy it sounds: we do not see the expansion of the YEC as a big project. The reason for not starting a new project lies in our policy: we want to have a maximum of two large projects at the same time. This meant that first the learning / work farm (with Wilde Ganzen) and the water and education project (with Share4More) had to be completed, before we could start something new. At the beginning of this newsletter you have read that these two projects have been completed, leaving the way to start something new. This is a project that we are taking up together with SEHH: the construction of a pre-school (school for young children, comparable to a kindergarten). We will apply for this at Wilde Ganzen. That requires time and energy, but we were looking forward to starting something new. Are you helping us? Of course we will inform you in the following news reports about the progress of this project.

So far this news report from September and October 2018. We thank you again for your interest. On our own we achieve nothing; we need your support, both financially and with great interest.   Therefore: thanks-thanks-thanks!
