Projects being realised:
The biggest project being realised at the moment is a project that is being carried out together with “de Wilde Ganzen”. It concerns the renovation of the “Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School” in Nilaveli. This school, dating from 1955, offers an education to some 250 to 300 students at the ages of 6 to 18. All students are from poor families. The school was partially destroyed by the Tsunami of December 2004.Since then students and teachers have not been able to use the toilets. Two class- rooms had completely disappeared, but have been rebuilt with financial support of the German organisation “Offer”. However, much still needs to be done and HAVONOS has agreed to realise the following:
- One of the new class-rooms is meant to be a computer- room. We raise money for fitting up this computer-room and the installation of electricity;
- (Re)constructing a stage/stand and sports floor for cultural activities, sports and games;
- (Re)constructing toilets and improving the water supply (including clean drinking water);
- The purchase of equipment for sports and games.
Another big project concerns the purchase of sewing machines for young women who have attended a vocational sewing course at the sewing school. With these machines they can earn their own livelihood by making and selling their products.
The sewing machines remain property of the SAC until the women have paid for them with money earned by selling their products. (micro credit).
Again another project is the purchase of playground equipment to be placed at the “Centre for Knowledge and Wisdom” in Nilaveli, a centre also realised with help of HAVONOS.
Furthermore we would like to expand our agricultural project to improve the standard of living in the agricultural sector.This project includes the construction of water pumps and wells.
We also need new contributors to enable children and youngsters in the district to have an education, thus giving them the prospect of a better future.
Last but not least we would like to support both a schooling and a food project.
On request with HAVONOS:
- The renovation and fitting up of more schools, and the purchase of computers for these schools to connect Nilaveli with the world and with us.
- The renovation of (more) sanitary provisions and the supply of clean drinking water to fight diseases caused by insufficient hygiene.
- The building of simple houses for young women and widows with young children. With these houses they improve their chances to find themselves a (new) husband and thus a better future.
- A contribution to the expenses of the educaton and livelihood of youngsters who live at St. Mary’s College in Trincomalee; these youngsters have been severely hit by the tsunami as well as the war, and have lost most, if not all, of their families. For just € 40,- a month a contributor can support a student ( tuition fees, clothing, accomodation, livelihood). The SAC wants to give serious and promising young people a chance to study to enable them to use their knowledge and skills for the benefit of their communities.
